With a history that reaches back all the way to 1935, UD Trucks have carved out a name for themselves for supplying some of the best and most reliable trucks on the market. In 2007 they joined the Volvo group, and have been working towards improving safety, efficiency and drivability. In the past seven years they have gone from strength to strength, and their newest model to hit the market, the Quon, is a testament to the hard work that has been poured into making their vehicles the best around.

In regards to safety, the Quon not only protects the driver and passenger (with side impact protectors, an extremely sturdy cabin and airbags equipped with the groundbreaking UD Knee Protection Airbag), but also other drivers on the road and members of the general public. Coming this November, new regulations will mean that trucks will be required to automatically decelerate when approaching traffic. UD have not only reached this goal, but surpassed it, with their “Traffic Eye Brake” which is fitted with a millimeter-wave radar, that not only measures the distance between the driver and the car in front, but the relative speed as well, meaning that a safe distance can be kept at all times. The electronic breaking system is also bursting with safety features, such as an Anti-lock Breaking System (ABS) and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), both of which work towards eliminating accidents.

Efficiency is also extremely important to UD, as they have been working towards improving their fuel efficiency for some years now, a fact that was solidified by the Quon Fuel Demonstrator being put on display at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. Yoshihiro Murakami of UD Trucks makes it very clear how important this issue is to the company:

“It’s obvious that fuel efficiency is not only a large cost item for our customers, but also one of the big issues for our society. We are happy to say that the new Quon makes a real contribution to a sound development in this area.”

UD points out that these social and environmental responsibilities are shared by all, and if there were just a 4% drop in fuel consumption in the Japanese truck industry, there would be an annual cut of around 8700 tons of CO2 released into the atmosphere, as well as 33 million liters less fuel being pumped into engines nationwide.

The comfort of driving a Quon is due to the spacious and comfortable cabin, which is molded round the needs of the driver, with a curved dash that brings everything within easy reach. The cabin itself is mounted on a “4-point wide tread air suspension mounting system” helping make the ride extremely smooth. There is also a passenger seat that can recline or even lay flat, as well as a large bed space to relax in.

Whilst driving, automatic systems like the Acceleration Limiter and the Soft Cruise Control, make the journey a smooth one. The UD Information Service (or UDIS) also gives you real time displays of your driving, as well as monthly reports, giving you helpful feedback enabling you to become a more efficient driver.

There are far too many new features to talk about in one article, so to find out more, we suggest you visit the UD website to find out more [link ], or check out the video on YouTube [ link ].
