Under a cool sky against a strip of beach just outside Tokyo, the 2013 Big Beach Festival brought hordes of music and fun lovers to indulge in some of the world’s best DJs. Split between three stages, there was always music pumping along the long stretch of beach, nestled between the sea and the city backdrop.
The Disco Balloon stage hosted acts like the international Nervo and Tom Staar and some home-grown Japanese talent like Shinichi Osawa and Tomoyuki Tanaka. Over at the Island Stage, Sasha, Ellen Allien and System of Survival were spinning alongside the Redbull THRE3STYLE crew. But by far, the biggest draw was the gigantic Big Beach Stage, with Sekitova, Maya Jane Coles, Erol Alkan and Basement Jaxx all warming up the crowds for the main event, which saw Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, take to the decks for a rare appearance in Japan.
If you needed a little respite, there was a range of world cuisine to try out, from Turkish kebabs, to Brazilian BBQ. The drinks companies were also out in force, with everything from Tequila shots to fruit yoghurt liquors. Luckily, if it all got a little too much for you, there were beds set up in the bars to crash out on, and even if they were taken, the warm sand and lulling waves offered a very comfortable alternative.
